Introduction to Graduate Studies in Spanish

 

INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS

  1. Personal Web page (15%). Each student in the class will develop their own personal web page and link it to the Home page for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.  You will learn the basics of web design and management, including the production of web pages, appropriate web page architecture, linking pages, working with  graphics and uploading and downloading files. The baseline for the evaluation is the preparation of a basic web page that includes a photo, a short bio, links—including a link to your C. V.--and which incorporates effective site management. By the end of the semester you must also have linked your webpage to the department's web site and activated your space on that site.

  2. Second Life Exploration (Counts under participation). each student will navigate to the Second Life Homepage, (www.secondlife.com) register for a free account, activate an avatar and negotiate through orientation Island. A workshop on Second Life will be scheduled early in the fall semester. You will find information about it on the COH site for academic computing workshops. You should plan on attending and learning the basics of Second Life. We will explore the possibiities of using this virtual space for you teaching and research throughout the semester.
  3. Curriculum Vitae (10%) Each student will draft a curriculum vitae, one of the basic building blocks of your professional arsenal,  and then learn to link it to her or his own web page as well as how to maintain a print version of the same document. You will learn now to keep a word, a pdf and an html version of your c.v. and how to keep then straight!!!!!

  4. Professional activities (abstract, cover letter, works cited)(15%) Using a piece of writing they have already prepared for another class students will learn the mechanics of submitting and delivering a paper at a scholarly conference. This will include finding the right kind of conference for your work, drafting a cover letter to submit with the conference paper and the preparation and submission of an abstract. The project will also include learning how to document your work--MLA bibliographical format. You will also learn how to turn your conference paper into an article to be submitted to a professional journal and how to document your work using MLA Style and online reference databases To demontrate your ability to document you must include a 30 item bibliography with at least three diffeent types of citations.

  5. Grant proposal (20%) Finding funding for your research is an important necessity for both graduate students and professors alike. Your proposal should follow the format found here

  6. The Book Review (20%) The book review is a cornerstone of academic research and one of the easiest ways to ease into the professional publishing world. Students at each level in a departmental program will be given the opportunity to review a book. The winning reviews will be published in the Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies.
