After retiring as Emeritus Professor of English from  California State University, San Bernardino, in 1997, I joined the English faculty at the University of Arizona, where I continue to work as a visiting professor in both the writing program and the graduate program in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English.  By the end of 2006, I had written, edited, or coedited thirteen books and about one hundred book chapters and articles.  The honors I value most highly are my selection as the Outstanding Professor at CSUSB in 1994 and an award the same year for “outstanding research” given by the Modern Language Association to my book Teaching and Assessing Writing. I continue to consult regularly with universities and other institutions on writing programs, writing across the curriculum, and writing assessment.

I live in Flagstaff, AZ, with my wife Volney, across the street from one of our five children and three of our nine grandchildren.
