After retiring as Emeritus Professor of English from California State University, San Bernardino, in 1997, I joined the English faculty at the University of Arizona, where I was a visiting professor in both the writing program and the graduate program in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English, until I retired (again) as Visiting Scholar in 2010. By the end of 2011, I had written, edited, or coedited fifteen books and more than one hundred book chapters and articles. The honors I value most highly are my selection as the Outstanding Professor at CSUSB in 1994, an award the same year for "outstanding research" given by the Modern Language Association to my book Teaching and Assessing Writing, and the 2011 Exemplar Award from the Conference on College Composition and Communication. I continue to consult regularly with universities and other institutions on writing programs, writing across the curriculum, and writing assessment.

I live in Flagstaff, AZ, with my wife Volney, across the street from one of our five children and three of our nine grandchildren.
