Control Devices There are several different types of controls. Among these are continuous and discrete controls. Continuous controls define a continuous range of postions whereas discrete controls allow for only a few settings. Light dimmers are examples of continuous controls. A 3-Way lamp switch is an example of a discrete control. There are also linear and rotary controls. Linear controls only allow linear motion. An example would be a vehicle's brake pedal. Rotary controls move in a circular patern like a blender knob. Sensory feedback is an important part of control design. Differentiating controls by shape, size and texture provides the user with kinesthetic information about the control. Controls can also be distinguished by labeling when the control is in plain sight of the user. Examples of control devices abound from computer keyboards and mice to the light switch you turned on when you entered the room.
