Search Engines: Finding Information on the Web

(Last section of Volume I, with light green page number flags)

1.    Read pages 37 to 41.

2.    Do Knowledge Test 04

3.    Do Hands-on Exercise 1: Searching the Web.

a.       Step 2. Make sure you are using YAHOO for your search. To display University of Miami home page, you need first click on the first link in the search panel, then click on the "University of Miami" link under the category Site Listing near the bottom of the page.

b.      Step 3. Use the FIND PEOPLE link instead of Directories; print out Robert Grauer’s information. Before printing out the page, enter your name and computer # in the header of the printout.

c.      Step 5. Enter your name and search for phone. Print out the results of your search with your name and computer # in the header.

4.    Read pages 47 to 52

5.    Do Hands-on Exercise 2: Finer Points of Searching.

a.       Step 1. Make sure you are using AltaVista for your search. You WILL NOT be able to get to the site on page 53 by following the instructions given in the book. Find the site on your own using the information given in the book.

b.      Before you print the document, make sure you print the table of links and you have added your name and computer # to the header.

c.      Step 6. Add your name to the document and print it out

6.    Do problems 6 on page 66.  Print out a map and written directions. Make sure your name and computer # appear in the header of the printout.

7.    Staple and turn in your printouts. Use this sheet as cover adding your section, name and computer number.

8.    Continue to work on TA02: Internet.
