ASSIGNMENT 2

 

Volume I

Essentials of Windows 2000

(First chapter on Volume I, with light blue page number flags)

 

Warning: Always Back Up Your Work.

 

1.   Read pages 2 to 12

The operating system in your computer at the lab is Windows NT 4.0. Thus, you will observe some differences with the Windows 2000 version. One of those differences is that you will not be able to change the style to Web style and you will only see the Classic style in your computer.

2.   Take the knowledge test K02 and submit the test result by email if you have not done so.

3.   Do Hands-on Exercise 1 starting on page 13: Welcome to Windows 2000. Your computer should be on already. Remember that your screen may look slightly different to the one shown in the book, since some of the options are available only for Windows 2000.

  1. On page 14, skip step 2. On page 16, skip step 4. These commands are available in your home computer, but are disabled in the computer lab.

  2. On page 17. Format a floppy disk, your window for formatting a floppy disk will be slightly different from the one shown in the book.

  3. Step 6: Your help screen and menu may be slightly different from the one shown in the book, but you should be able to find the required information.

  4. Do not do Step 7 on pages 19.

4.   Read pages 20 to 23

5.   Do Hands-on Exercise 2: The Exploring Windows Home Page.

a.   In Step 2, download the files to your floppy disk or to your zip disk.

b.   In Step 6, put your name and computer # instead of John Doe. Print the letter.

6.   Read pages 33 to 35

7.   Do Hands-on Exercise 3: The Practice files.

a.   Steps 1 to open Windows Explorer right click on the START button and select EXPLORE.

b.   Read through but do not do Step 2.

c.   Step 3: Your Network drive is J: also called ABE120

d.   Step 4: Instead of using drive A, you may also use the H: drive. During the rest of the semester, you will only have that disk available for your temporary storage.

YOU MUST ALWAYS KEEP A COPY OF YOUR WORK ON A FLOPPY OR ZIP DISK

8.   Read pages 41 to 42

9.   Do Hands-on Exercise 4: Windows Explorer

a.   Steps 1 to open Windows Explorer right click on the START button and select EXPLORE.

b.   Before Step 3, create a folder under H:, with your initials or nick name. You will use this folder during the semester to work during the class periods.

c.   Step 3: Use the folder you created on the H: disk instead of My Document folder.

d.    Step 4: Type your name and computer # instead of John Doe.

e.    Step 5: Remember to use your folder on H drive instead of My Document Folder.

10.  Do problems 1 and 2 at the end of the chapter pages 55 to 56. Replace "Eric Simon" with your name and computer # in both questions. Also replace descriptive texts pertaining to the details of drives on your computer in problem 1.

11.  Staple and turn in your printouts. Use this sheet as cover adding your section, name and computer number.
