Professor T. Kundu received his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur in 1979. He was the winner of the President of India Gold Medal (PGM) for ranking first among all engineering graduates (close to 300) from all disciplines in IIT Kharagpur in 1979. He joined UCLA as a recipient of the University of California Regents' Fellowship in 1979. His MS and PhD were from the Department of Mechanics and Structures at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1980 and 1983, respectively. He received the UCLA Engineering Alumni Award in 1981 for his outstanding performance as a graduate student. He joined the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics of the University of Arizona as an Assistant Professor in August 1983 and was promoted to full professor in 1994. He received the Humboldt Research Prize (also known as the Senior Scientist Award) in 2003 and Humboldt Fellowship in 1989 and 1996 from Germany. He received the 2015 Research Award for Sustained Excellence from ASNT (The American Society for Nondestructive Testing) Research Council in recognition of his outstanding and sustained research contributions in NDE/NDT, he also received the 2015 SHM Life Time Achievement Award from the SHM commnuity at the IWSHM (International Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring) at Stanford University, in 2012 he was chosen as the winner of the NDE Lifetime Achievement Award given by the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), in 2012 he was also recognized as the Engineering Faculty Fellow of the University of Arizona (Similar to Chair Professorship at some other universities). In 2008 he received the SHM Person of the Year Award given by the Structural Health Monitoring journal. In 2009 he received the Outstanding Faculty award for teaching chosen by the undergraduate students of the Civil Engineering Department.
