A new breed of multifunctional contrast agents will pave the way for new diagnostic imaging approaches and treatment paradigms. These agents include novel agents that enable new imaging approaches, molecular imaging and cell targeting, imaging combined with therapy, and multimodal imaging agents. These agents can become more and more complex and graded on an intelligence scale.
