June 1999 - Ecuador
Two days before I left for Ecuador the President of Ecuador declared a state of emergency because of a taxi strike.
I had non-refundable tickets and decided to go anyway. When I got there I found that not only were the taxi's on
strike but the buses and trains had stopped running as well. I rented a car and drove to Riobamba, about 100 miles
south of Quito. On saturday when I made the trip I ran into several roadblocks and angry mobs but it only took 4 or
5 hours to make the trip. By the time I started back on Monday morning the Indians had joined in the strike and it
took me 2 days to make it back to Quito. Fortunately I only had two flats and most of the damage to the rental car
was underneath where it wasn't readily apparent. I did end up having to pay $80 for a scatch down one side I got
while trying to drive through a tree laying across the Pan-American highway.
