Assignment 12
Equations
- Do
Skill Test S12 Word Chapter 7, using S02 as ID. This test includes skills
described in Word Chapter 7.
- The
purpose of this tutorial is to become familiar with the features for developing equations.
Equations are frequently placed on a separate line; however, the equations mode can be
used to insert special characters into text. A few simple examples are given below.
- Your
assignment is to prepare a duplicate of the double lines, text and equations
shown below. The next page describes a procedure for putting equations in a Word document.
- Place
your name and user number at the top of the page in Heading 1 style.
- Save
your work frequently
A common
example is the second order algebraic equation

An example of characters in text is the
following symbol inserted using the equation mode.
PROCEDURE FOR TYPING EQUATIONS
- If
you haven't already, Place your name and user # in the Heading 1 style at the top of the
page, then press enter twice.
- Insert
the double lines using Format and Borders and Shading.
- Type
the text below the double line and before equation (1).
- Press
enter twice, then click the right align button on the formatting toolbar.
- The
procedure for typing equation (1) is CLICK INSERT then select OBJECT. Be
sure the Create New tab is selected. SELECT MICROSOFT EQUATION 3.0 or 2.0. THEN
CLICK OK. An equation box will appear.
- In
the small box type a and x then CLICK the third icon from the left in the bottom
row of the equation toolbar. This brings up a series of 15 options. Select the
symbol that shows a box with a superscript on the upper right corner (upper left
box). Notice this places a small box as a superscript to x. Type 2 in this box,
then press the right arrow key to move the insertion point out of this box, type
the plus sign from the keyboard, type bx then plus again, type c
then the equal sign and zero. The equation is now complete. CLICK
outside the box and the equation mode will disappear. If the equation has a box around it CLICK
outside the box.
- To
put the equation in the center and the equation number at the right margin, first format
the layout of the equation object as In line with text. Then move the
insertion point to the end of the equation object. Your equation object should be located
at the right border. If not, press the Align Right button on the formatting
tool bar. Press the tab key until the equation is approximately centered, Now type
the parenthesis and the equation number.
- To
change the font after the equation has been typed, CLICK on the equation to place a
box around it then place the arrow in the equation and double CLICK. This brings
the equation editor back and the equation toolbar. To change the font, select or highlight
the equation in the box, then CLICK Style on the menu then select other.
The font list and bold options will appear. Select the Arial font and CLICK the
Bold box. If the Greek letters disappeared, edit the equations to re-insert them. They
need not be bold.
- Repeat
this procedure for the remaining text and equations by selecting the appropriate symbol
from the toolbar. Note: for equation 2 you need to use the second icon from the left to
select the symbol for an equation with a numerator and denominator.
- Save
and Print your results. Turn them in as a part of the assignment.
The
following exercises are parts of your reviews in anticipation of the test next week. This
is a good time to review your skills and find out areas that need improvement.
- Do
Practice 1 from Word Chapter 7 on page 338. Print out two versions of the document as
instructed and turn them in.
- Do
practice 3 from Word Chapter 7 on page 339. Print out two versions of the document as
instructed and turn them in.
- Do
practice 4 from Word Chapter 5 on page 251. Print out the finished document and turn in as
a part of your assignment.
Next Week
Reviews. Questions and answers. More practices.
Make sure you bring both volumes of the textbook.
