In 1999, advising for majors and pre-majors in English Teaching moved from the Department of Teaching and Teaching Education to the Department of English. When classes are in session, advising services are available daily from 9:00 to 5:00 in the Undergraduate English Advising Center (Modern Languages 450; phone 621-5421). Students transferring to the University to prepare for careers in English Teaching, or changing from another major program, should follow the links on this page.

Getting Started
- First and second years. All students are classified according the number of units they have completed at any given time:
- Freshman = 1-24 units
- Sophomore = 25-55
- Junior = 56-86 units
- Senior = 87+ units

- Deadlines. Applications are considered twice a year. The deadline for applying for Spring semester is the second Friday of September; for Fall semester, it is the second Friday of February.

- 370A. English Literature: Beginnings to Renaissance
- 370B. English Literature: Restoration to Modern
- (Either course may be taken first. Students are advised to take A in the fall semester and B in the spring.)
- Composition
- 306. Advanced Composition
- 380. Literary Analysis
- (Either course may be taken first. Students are advised to write the UPDWP beforehand.)
- Language
- 255 - Introduction to the English Language
- 405 or 421. History of the English Language
- 406. Modern Grammar and Usage
- (405 or 421 is prerequisite to 406.)
- Methods Courses
- 410. The Teaching of Composition
- 411. The Teaching of Literature
- (306 is prerequisite to 410; 370A or B and 380 are prerequisite to 410.)
- Traditions and Diversity
- American Literature: 1 course from 265, 278, 279, 37!A, 371B, 443,477, 478, 482, 483, 484A, 484B, 488A, 488B.
- Shakespeare: 1 course from 231, 431A, or 431B.
- Multiethnic Language and Literature: 1 course from 408, 418, 434, 477, or LRC 468.
- (Other courses from English or Language, Reading and Culture may be substituted with permission.; English Honors students substitute 495A.)

- Take 14 further units (5 further courses) from CLAS 100-499, COMM 100-499, ENGL 207-499, LING 100-499, LRC 300-499 (except 435), JOUR 100-499, TAR 100-499. No minor is required.
