Project Option 8 "Last Chance"

Due Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001

Choose one option. Make certain to indicate which option you have chosen in the heading of yourpaper (see instructions for format.) The length of your paper will depend upon the nature of the project. Most papers will be 2-3 pages of double-spaced type. I expect written projects to be neatly prepared and ask that you follow a standard format. As much as possible (again taking into account the nature of the project), all written papers will be graded according to a standard set of criteria out of a 50 point total. If you have questions regarding any of the options, do not hesitate to email me at Sturman@u.arizona.edu.

Option 1: Music and Metaphor

This unit takes us full circle. Not only do we return to our first discussions of the music of Beethoven, but also to issues of value and meaning. As you listen to the music for the Chinese qin (sometimes spelled chin), what elements seem to be essential? Compare that music to the piece by Hua Yanjun performed by the Chinese ensemble on Wright's Introductory CD. What metaphors (to use Cook's term) seem pertinent to the appreciation of these two performances? Might there be several metaphoric layers to consider? Explain.

Option 2: Composition compared to Improvisation

What are the differences between composition and improvisation? Discuss the coninuum between the two processes using specific musical examples to support your points.

Option 3: The Music of the Late Baroque

As we return to consider music of the late Baroque, we should remember that European composers before and during the Baroque period were supported by patronage attached to the church or the court. Composition was less a matter of creating works of individual expression as it was matter of skillfully fulfilling one's duty. The craft of composing was often considered a matter of family inheritance and was passed along from generation to generation. For J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel composing was a job in which individual artistic expression had to be tailored to fit the needs and requirements of patrons and performance situations. Discuss how the work conditions of these two composers differed and how that resulted in important distinctions between their music. Explain in your answer how they also relied upon important Baroque conventions to guide their work. Use a few selected musical examples to illustrate your points.
