LAB NINE
Due Date: Mon. Nov. 4; bring papers to
lecture
Choose one topic and prepare a report of 2-3 pages in length of
double-spaced type. Be sure to indicate which example you have chosen in
the heading of your paper and follow other expectations for format and writing
criteria.
One Option with Many Choices
Chose your favorite example from chapter ten for extended discussion and listen to it carefully (more than once). Make a special effort to also listen to the complete work from which the excerpts
in your text are taken. Recordings are available in the Music
Library.
- If you chose 61: Discuss the appeal of Rondo form. How does it fit into the composite sonata (the complete set of movements)? Address the first two concerns on p. 245 of your text, under "Reflections" for Example 61.
- If you chose 62: Discuss the appeal of Rondo form. How does it fit into the composite sonata (the complete set of movements)? Address at least two of the other concerns Willoughby suggests under "Reflections" on p. 247.
- If you chose 63:Discuss the role and appeal of theme and variation form in a composite work like a string quartet. Does it demand the same concentration from the listener as does sonata-allegro form? See Willoughby p. 248 for additional ideas.
- If you chose 64:Consider what features of this selection make Willoughby think about "simplicity," (Is the structural design simple; is the texture simple?) Then address at least two the concerns he raises under "Reflections" for the Clarinet C
oncerto on pp. 248 and 249.
- If you chose 65:Discuss what makes this example of sonata-allegro form seem so logical. You may wish to compare it to the unfolding of a serious conversation or the presentation of a written argument.
- If you chose 66:Respond to the first two questions Willoughby
presents on p. 251 under "Reflections."
