LAB SEVEN
Due Date: Wed. Oct. 16; bring papers to lecture
Choose one option and prepare a report of 3 pages in length of double-spaced
type. Be sure to indicate which option you have chosen in the heading of
your paper and follow other expectations for format and writing
criteria.
Option
One
View one of the videos in the music library featuring
music in Asia and Africa..
On reserve are:
- Stars in the Sky: The Indian Film Music Phenomenon
- Music in China: No. 17 Cotton Mill Shanghai Blues
- Sukiyaki and Chips: The Japanese Sounds of Music
- Konkombe: Nigerian Music
- Rhythm of Resistance: Black Music in South Africa
- Two Faces of Thailand: A Musical Portrait
In your report answer the following questions.
- What kinds of music did you hear? (Descri
be the range of styles or types.)
- What are the distinctive features of the music you heard? (You might wish to focus on shared features.)
- What makes the music important to those who play it and respond to it? (For example, consider how the music m
ight help its practioneers project a sense of identity.)
- Compare the music you encountered in the video with a corresponding selection in Willoughby's chapter 7. What features of the music does Willoughby stress compared to the producers of the film?
- How does seeing performances affect your understanding of the music?
Option Two
Listen to all the selections for chapter seven (including examples 44, 46, and 48).
In your report answer the following
questions:
- Why might a person argue that examples 48 and 49 have no national identity base? Do the two selections transcend national boundaries in the same way?
- Compare the multinational dimension of the last two selections with the oth
ers presented in the chapter. Are any of Willoughby's examples "ethnically pure" in a musical sense? Why or why not?
- Some scholars worry about what is sometimes called "cultural greyout." In your opinion do blendings like those in examples 48 and 49
endanger or enhance the world's musical resources?
- Do hybrid works lead towards the reduction of variety and dinstinction in music around the globe?
In your discussion, feel free to incorporate references to other recordings you know from o
utside the text.

ng.
After introducing your topic and the results of your search, answer the following questions.
- What makes each resource valuable?
- What kind of information does each provide? (No, you do not have to read the entire book, li
sten to the entire recording, or absorb all the information linked to any one site, but you must skim the material to obtain a clear sense of its potential.)
Be certain to provide complete bibliographic or discographic data for each source at the
end of your report.
