LAB FIVE
Due Date: Mon. Sep. 30; bring papers to
lecture
Choose one option and prepare a report of 2-3 pages in length of
double-spaced type. Be sure to indicate which option you have chosen in
the heading of your paper and follow other expectations for formatand writing
criteria.
Option one
Listen to the additional selections for chapter five (examples 27, 29,and 30).
In your report answer the following questions.
- How do these additional examples enrich your understanding of the
chapter's main topic? (Consider, for example, how they relate to the items
on the Willoughby CD.)
- Choose your favorite example. Answer the questions Willoughby asks under "reflections" for that number. How does your choice compare to the other examples Willoughby offers?
- What musical selection would you offer to augment this chapter? How does your suggestion connect to the chapter? In your answer you may choose to discuss aspects of the musical structure (especially Willoughby's notion of engaging musical patterns) a
nd performance context. As completely as possible, provide a discographic reference indicating the title of the recording, the recording company, the recording number, and the date of release.
Option two
Search the internet for information on any of the popular music styles examined by Willoughby in chapter five of your text.

In your report answer the following questions.
- Which is your favorite site? Explain why you like it and how it relates to Willoughby's chapter five.
- What, (according to the site's author, either directly or by implication) makes the featured music popular or attractive?
- Does the web site highlight the market potential of your selected style, performer, or genre? How?
- What might be some potential links for the Web site you identified that would show connections between your chosen musical style (performer, genre) and other modes of presentation (such as film, theater, etc.)?
