LAB THREE
Due: Monday, Sep. 16. (Bring
papers to lecture.)
Choose one option and prepare a report of 2-3 pages in length of
double-spaced type. Be sure to indicate which option you have chosen in
the heading of your paper and follow other expectations for format and
writing criteria.
Option one
Watch the film "Say Amen, Somebody" (It will be shown in room 162 on Wed., Sep. 11 from 9:00-10:50 am).
In your report answer the following questions:
- What do you learn about the tensions gospel musicians experience performing in concerts or commerical situations versus performing music in ministry?
- Do the songs themselves or the way they are performed reflect these different performance settings settings?
- How does this film amplify (or challenge) the points Willoughby makes on pages 54 and 55?
- How do the selections in the film compare to the ones in your text? (Choose one or two examples to discuss in writing.)
Option two
On the internet, visit: http://www.gacoast.com/navigator/quimbys.html
In your report answer the following questions:
- What do you find most interesting about this site?
- Does it appear that the Quimby Brothers have adjusted their music (or other aspects of thier performance) to suit the demands of their current status as touring concert artists?
- How does the sample selection compare to the examples in Willoughby chapter three?
- Can you recommend another Web site that connects to chapter two? Explain the connection.
Option three
On the internet, visit: http://research.umbc.edu/efhm/other/other.html
Click on "Clyde Davenport."
In your report answer the following questions:
- Compare Titon's discussion of Clyde Davenport's fiddle music to Willoughby's treatment of fiddle music (p. 45) and "Soldier's Joy" (pp. 58-59). Which do you prefer, why?
- What makes either of these selections well suited for dancing?
- How might either melody be different if performed on another instrument? (You have some obvious examples in "Soldier's Joy."
Option four
Option four - Listen to all the additional selections for chapter three (examples 10, 12, 13, and 16).
In your report answer the following questions:
- How do these additional examples enrich your understanding of the chapter's main topic? (Consider, for example, how they relate to the items on your CD.)
- What is your favorite selection? Answer the questions Willoughby asks under "reflections" for that item.
- What questions would you add if you were writing this text?
