LAB TWO
Due: Mon. Sep. 9 (Bring papers to
lecture.)
- Listen to the recorded examples that accompany chapters one and two of the Willoughby text.
- Choose your two favorites and write an analysis (approx. 3 pages of
double-spaced type) of each addressing the criteria below. You should try
to use some of the terms introduced in the text. Follow all the format guidelines and check to see that your work
meets the five basic writing criteria for work
in this course.
- At some point in your discussion, describe why you like the selection.
- Describe the rhythmic features of the selection:
- Consider the relative tempo of the basic pulse, its organization (metrical or not, duple, triple, mixed, free).
- Describe the melody (basically conjunct, disjunct, range). Do sections of the melody repeat? Describe the pattern of repetition.
- What kinds of instruments or singers do you hear?
- Describe the texture of the selection.
- How many performers (parts)?
- How do their parts interact.
- Do the performers play or sing the same thing at the same time, or do their parts contrast (how, when)?
- Do they play/sing in unison, in harmony, as independent, interlocking melodies, or a simultaneous variations of the same melody?
- Are all sections of the work treated the same way, or does the performance feature different combinations of performers at different points?
- What is the relationship between music and text?
- Describe the overall form of the selection(the pattern of large-scale repetition and contrast that gives the work its structure).
