LAB THIRTEEN
Due Date: Dec. 9; bring papers to lecture
Choose one topic and prepare a report of 2-3 pages in length of double-spaced type. Be sure to indicate which example you have chosen in the heading of your paper and follow other expectations for format and good writing.
Option One -
Discuss the role the Internet may (or already does) play in shaping the
network of relations comprising the music industry. Be sure to offer
specific examples to support your points.
Option Two -
While most people consider technological developments as improvements or
advances in modern life, some might argue that technology also changes our
lives in undesirable ways. In what ways has technology changed the way
Americans engage in musical activity? Do you think we actively engage
with music more or less than did our ancestors 150 years ago? Please defend your argument with specific examples.
Option Three -
In the Music Library take The Nature of Music Cassette
series edited and produced by Deborah Lamberton and Karl Signell. Listen
to EITHER the 30 minute program on Music and Commerce (program #3) or the
one on the
Music and Technology (program #10). Compare at least two of the points
raised on the tape
with issues we have discussed in class or that Willoughby raises in his
chapter on the music industry. You will find the printed program guide
included in the cassette box a great aid in following the
tape-recorded narrative and musical examples.
