Ethnomusicology for Undergraduate Students at the University of Arizona

Students interested in the study of music in its cultural context and particularly those interested in studying vernacular, popular and non-western music traditions have several Bachelor of Arts degree plans that accomodate the study of ethnomusicology as either a major or minor emphasis. For undergraduate students with performance interests, the Bachelor of Arts in Music is an option. For students with broader academic interests in the liberal arts the Global Studies degree is a good choice. Students in Anthropology, Latin American studies, Near Eastern Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Religious Studies, and Anthropology have developed plans of study that include ethnomusicology.

All students interested in exploring such options are urged to meet with Dr. Sturman to discuss course choices and individualized curricula.

Courses in the School of Music include but are not limited to: Music in World Cultures, Rock and American Popular Music, Mexican Music, Studies in Latin American Music, Research Techniques, Seminar on Publishing and the Music Industry, Recording Techniques, Independent Study in Fieldwork, Independent Study in Area Research.
