2000-2001 Statistics from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program  (UCR)

Year Number of Offenses Rate per 100,000 women
2000 90,178 32.0
2001 90,491 31.8
Percent Change +0.3 -0.8

1. This table reflects the number of forcible rapes reported to law enforcement across the country during 2000 and 2001 and has the following limitations:
A. The FBI defines forcible rape as "the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will". This definition does not include statutory rape (rape without force), other sex crimes, or the rape of men.
B. The UCR records incidence rates of REPORTED rapes. According to this method only persons raped within a specific period and who notify law enforcement are considered victims.

C. Research indicates that up to 80-90% of rapes are not reported and that stranger rapes are more likely to be reported then acquaintance rapes.

D.  The use of incidence rates in isolation may obscure the overall frequency of rape and attempted rape.
