"I want an A in the class. What tips can you give me on improving my class performance?

Take complete sets of notes every day. Lecture materials will be on the exams.

Do not let readings pile up...you will feel much better knowing you only have to review instead of reading the assigned chapters. Besides I will give at least one or two surprise quizzes testing to see if the readings were done.

We are in a small classroom...you can not hide. Be ready to participate fully in the discussions.

"What about the exams? How can I write better essay answers?

Remember, one long paragraph is not an essay. Style matters.

Answer all parts of the essay questions. If the question is multi-part, use at least one paragraph per question.

Use these questions as topics sentences to guide the reader through them.

creating an outline to organize your thoughts will come in handy.

"I hate oral presentations in general. How can I prepare myself for it?

I know what you mean. If you are doing a formal presentation (such as reading a paper), read each paragraph to yourself and then read the same paragraph out loud.

After going through the paper (at least) once in this fashion, then you can read the entire length. Remember, practice makes perfect.

"I am a (choose one) conservative/liberal/mainstream/radical and I don't understand why you are lecturing using material from a (choose one) conservative/liberal/mainstream/radical perspective.

My examination of U.S. history is not designed to incorporate my chosen beliefs upon students. However, I do expect students completing this class to have a better understanding of differing historical analysis.

Neither agreeing nor disagreeing with my own beliefs factors in my assessment of student performance. As such, students will be expected to understand diverging historical analysis but are not required, in the least, to incorporate these perspectives into their own belief systems.
