Answer One Essay (75%) Be sure to give specific examples from the readings to buttress your argument.

Suggestions for essay preparation:
a. state your main themes in the first paragraph
b. then develop those themes in subsequent paragraphs, providing specific evidence to substantiate your positions
c. Write a summary and/or concluding paragraph restating your major themes.

1. What indications were there in your readings that the federal government acted to promote the welfare of people in the nation? Discuss three specific examples to support your arguments.

2. What indications were there in your readings that ethnic and minority groups were or were not treated well by members of the majority culture? Discuss three specific groups and give the necessary facts to support your thesis.

3. In which areas should local, state, and/or federal governments have intervened, but did not do so, to protect the interests of laborers and/or farmers. Discuss three specific examples to support your arguments.

1. What were the Progressive Amendments to the Constitution and how did they reflect Progressive values?

2. What indications were there that the decade, 1918-1928, constituted an “age of intolerance?”

3. What significant changes occurred in American society and/or government (including legislation passed by Congress) during the 1930s? Choose three specific items to discuss and indicate whether they helped or hurt most Americans then and now.
