Answer one of the following questions. Be sure to use specific examples to substantiate your points of view.

1. To what extent have activities of the federal government (or any branch thereof) promoted the social and/or economic welfare of the American people? Discuss, using at least two items in three of the time frames listed below and explain why these items helped to promote social justice:

Progressive Era
The New Deal

The 1960s
1970s - present

2. Compare and contrast the post World War II policies of the Soviet Union towards the nations bordering its western frontiers with American policies towards Latin America since the end of the nineteenth century.

(If you so desire, you may take these questions home with you.)

Note: For those of you who did not take exam 1 or exam 2, please bring your blue book to the TA at the front of the room when you are finished with the first part of the examination and get a copy of the multiple choice questions. Then take a seat and do part I where you will not disturb others who are still writing.

For those of you who have taken the first and second examinations, please bring your blue book to the front of the room when you are finished with the examination, give it to a TA, and leave quietly. There are other students still taking the examination and they need the room to be quiet for them to concentrate. If you need to speak with your TA please do so in the hallway.
