Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a great sport that refines motor skills unlike virtually any other form of physical activity.  People that have participated in gymnastics tend to master other physical activities faster than most others.  The kinesthetic awareness that is developed is beneficial to every other sport.  The enormous strength-to-weight ratio, physical conditioning, mental discipline, and the ability to overcome obstacles (primarily the fear of injury) are all things necessary to be successful in gymnastics.

I have been involved in the sport of gymnastics for the better part of my life.  I started by following my sister to the gym and then playing on the trampoline in our back yard.  With my ever present need for adrenaline and possibility of physical harm, I finally started training seriously when I decided to take a break from motorcycle racing.  From then on, gymnastics has been a full time endeavor.  From  high school, to competing for Arizona State University, to coaching at all levels and now coaching for The University of Arizona.

Collegiate gymnastics offers a unique opportunity to participate in an individual sport under the umbrella of a team concept.  Suddenly all of the work that has been done for years is not only for yourself, but for others as well.  Today, the level of gymnastics being performed at the collegiate level is competitive with all other levels of artistic gymnastics.  The belief that a female gymnast stops improving after the age of 16 is a thing of the past.  Combined with the true camaraderie developed by the teams, collegiate gymnastics is some of the most enjoyable gymnastics to both watch and participate in.
