RESIDENCES: According to tax records passed down through subsequent generations, Abraham Stilley (Staley) may have been living in Franklin County, Virginia, as early as 1795. However, his first land purchase there is dated August 4, 1805. This purchase, made with James McVey (brother-in-law), was for 140 acres of land lying just south of the Staunton River near the "Island ford" and "Praters Run" (see Map C, page 7 of The Virginia Staleys). He, with his family, moved to Warren Township, Marion County, Indiana, around 1833 where he bought land from Thomas Morton McVey (his nephew, son of John McVey) on January 12, 1838.
