After graduation I went to Butler County Community
College in El Dorado to run track & cross country. In 1972 prior to
my senior year I married Charlene Smith, formerly of Junction City,
but a Salina Mustang when I met her. I then went to KSU, graduating
in 1973 in secondary English education. I taught in the Geary County/Junction
City school district for 7 years at Fort Riley Junior High.
Acquired MS in Curriculum and Instructtion in 1976,
and moved into administration. PhD in Administration from KSU in 1983.
Assumed several administrative positions in Junction City over first
21 years of my career, ending with Associate Superintendent. I then went
to Ann Arbor, Michigan as Deputy Superintendent for Instructional Services.
This was a district with about 16,700 students. I stayed there for five
years--four as Deputy Superintendent and one as the interim superintendent.
I'm now superintendent in Fargo, North Dakota--about
11,700 students. (Ya, you betcha!) Two daughters--Amy and Kristen. One
advantage of my job is that I've been able to hand each of my daughters
their high school diploma. Amy stayed in Ann Arbor and works for KMC,
a telecommunications company. Kristen just graduated last year (class
of 2000) from Fargo South and is attending Minnesota State University
at Moorhead across the river.
