Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein, a composer, artist, and author of numerous books of prose and poetry for younger readers, as well as illustrator of his own works, was born on September 25, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He started writing when he was a young boy. His works are characterized by a deft mixing of the sly and the serious, the macabre and the just plain silly. His works, such as The Unicorn are beloved by countless adults as well as by children. The Unicorn was put to music, recorded, and made popular by the Irish Rovers. Shel Silverstein died in May 1999.
