Scholarship opportunities at the School of Music and Dance
Generally there are two types of scholarship at the School of Music and Dance: those that consist of "cash" scholarships, which are simply money applied toward your tuition, and those which are tuition-waiver scholarships: awards which waive certain amounts of your tuition, usually the In-State and Out-of-State portions separately. If you are from out-of-state, in order to have all of your tuition covered by a waiver, you must be awarded both an In-State and an Out-of-State waiver (these waivers are also called "Regents Waivers"). There are also Stipends, Fellowships, and Teaching Assistanceships. Each of these carry varying amounts of duties attached to the award.
To receive scholarship from the School of Music you must first file an application with the School and arrange for an audition, either live or by tape with your major professor (the teacher for your instrument or voice-type.) A list of professors is available on the School of Music web page. It is HIGHLY suggested that if you wish to succeed in receiving a scholarship, that you contact the major professor for your instrument or voice as soon as possible (during the Fall and certainly before November).
Your studio professor can help you apply for scholarship, but it should be done by February 1st at the latest, primarily because the "system" is sort-of "First Come First Serve" and there are a very limited number of waivers and cash awards available. One nice thing about the String Area policies toward scholarship is that you do NOT have to be a music major to receive a School of Music tuition waiver, though priority is given to music majors.
Some limitations: We cannot award Out-of-State waivers to students already having been attending the University. We generally do not award cash scholarships above tuition for undergrads. Graduate student applicants can receive both waivers and cash. Foreign students must have a student visa in order to receive an award.
To receive more information about what kinds of awards are available in what areas of study in the School, please contact the School of Music admissions office, at 621-1655.
