International Rescue Committee:
Interns will work closely with a refugee family as a mentor, tutor, and friend. Interns will develop personal relationships with refugee individuals or families and serve as a guide as newcomers adjust to life in Tucson. The interns' experiences and responsibilities will vary depending on the needs of their mentee(s). One might advise the family on housing or transportation issues, take children to the park and help with homework, tutor the family in English, escort family members to medical appointments, and educate the family on health issues.
Interns will work closely with Jennifer Pierson, the IRC volunteer and donations coordinator. Jenn will meet regularly with interns to receive feedback on the mentor/tutor program and respond to concerns. This is a great opportunity to become involved in the life of a refugee family and to learn firsthand about refugee resettlement issues.
