Personal
.
My mother's people are immigrants from Denmark, on
both her mother's and father's sides. My father's people are immigrants
from Scotland. My Scottish ancestors were very proud of their heritage.
Unfortunately, my Danish grandparents did not share much about their culture.
Virginia is my home state. In part, I am Japanese by
culture. I was born on October
31st in Norfolk, was raised in Sasebo, Japan and in Monterey
and South San Francisco California. I went to high school and undergraduate
school in Virginia. I graduated from McLean High School. In 1973
I received my BSW
(Bachelor of Social Work) from James
Madison University.
My husband's
name is Mike. He is an English teacher and has been a Gifted &
Talented Coordinator. He is a moving Cherokee Storyteller and a
leader among Inter-tribal people.
We have a daughter
in our family. Her name is Erica. She is a Junior at The
University of Arizona. She graduated from Rock Point Community
High School in Rock Point, Arizona in 1997. She recently married
O.C. Tom from Lukachukai.
Two of my interests are hummingbirds
and Japanese
flower arranging.

Occupation
Currently I am an Information Specialist for the
Community
Outreach and Education Program of the Center for Toxicology in the
Pharmacy School at the University of Arizona. I build web pages, teach
web page design to high school students, do research to locate useful
information for an environmental health sciences curriculum, and do
environmental health outreach within the Native American community in
Tucson.
I was the librarian at Red
Mesa High School from 1999 to 2001. I moved there from Rock
Point Community High School. I worked in high school libraries
for 6years and enjoyed it very much. The librarian's job has at
least three parts. They are encouraging students to read, teach
students to do research, and assisting students
to make the most from the computers
and other resources in the library. To do all these activities
I do a lot of Internet research, purchase books and other materials
and prepare lessons. I also work with the teachers to organize
assignments and research opportunities. My motto is "Reading and
Researching on the Web - Opens the World to Students"!
To learn to be a Librarian I enrolled at Prescott
College for my masters degree. I
have a M.A. in Education. My degree is called "Facilitating Education
from the Library". My thesis is about
teaching students to do in-depth research on the Internet. The reference
list for my thesis can be found using this
link. I am now a student in the school of Information
Resources and Library Science at the University
of Arizona.
I teach research skills and Internet navigation
skills. If you have not been in one of my classes and want to
learn more about how to find useful information on the web please come
see me any time.
Before I was a Librarian I was a college professor
at San Juan College. I
taught Sociology 101 there. That school is in Farmington, New
Mexico and has many fine programs.
I lived in Florida
for over 15 years before coming to tne Navajo Reservation.
There I ran a consulting firm that trained employees of nursing homes.
We evaluated the social work and activities programs of these nursing
homes and educated the staff that were responsible on how to take care
of the elders better.

Recreation
For fun I like to have people over to my house.
I enjoy a good party and I really love to walk. I try to find
a place to walk where ever I go. It could be in the woods, in
a park or in a mall. For physical exercise I enjoy yoga.
In the fall I always look forward to football
games. I like football in person or on T.V. I like high
school, college and professional games. I get really excited when
my team wins and somewhat upset when they lose.
To relax and express myself I paint
with water colors. My paintings are often in an oriental style.
I especially enjoy painting birds.
My dog's
name is Safo. She is a small German
Shepherd. She is 16 years old now. She is still very
active and likes to go for walks. She had never seen goats or
sheep before we moved to the Navajo Reservation. Yet one day she
herded goats that got onto campus by mistake. They goats did not
like a strange dog herding them and ran . It was a funny sight because
she herded them toward my husband and I as we ran away. We ended
up getting onto the football bleachers before we could get away from
those goats.
My favorite activity is traveling. I like to
travel by plane or car.
I have visited Mexico, Korea, Israel and Japan. I have visited
almost all the states, except Alaska. I like to see new things
and meet new people.
As you might guess, I like to read. I read
at least one recreational book a week. My favorite books are mysteries.
I have read three Native American mystery writers that I especially
like. They are Tony
Hillerman, James
D. Doss and Jean
Hager. I also enjoy Valerie
Wilson Wesley. She writes mysteries set in New Jersey.
Another female author I like to read is Sue
Grafton. Other favorite authors include Anne
Perry, who writes mysteries set in London in the late 19th century,
Lawrence
Block, who writes stories set in New York City and Ellis
Peters who writes about medieval England. For more good mystery
books:

Dreams
My most
important dreams are for the happiness and prosperity of
all people. I became a Baha'i because I strongly believe that
all people are equal and that everybody needs opportunities for happiness.
I believe true happiness come from the spirit.
Someday I hope to own a house
in the woods. I enjoy trees and sunshine and hope to have lots
where I live. I want to have money
for retirement because I hope to continue to travel around the world.
One place I really want to visit is Australia.
My sister and her family live there, in Melbourne. I love to learn.
So maybe I'll get a Ph.D.
in Library or Information Science. I am enrolled in classes with the
School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University
of Arizona and I am taking classes on the Internet. They are called
"Virtual Classes".
I hope I'll always have acomputer
that will let me do and learn about every thing I want to know. I also
hope I'll always have jobs that let me share what I know with others.
A new recreation I want to pursue is star
gazing. I think that would be a lot of fun.
