Journalism Experience

November 2003-Present. Feature writer for the Southwest Climate Outlook, a monthly CLIMAS publication distributed electronically to thousands of stakeholders in Arizona and New Mexico. Twenty of these 2,000-word articles (listed on the next page) will be published in the spring of 2007 as a book, Global Warming in the Southwest: Observations and Impacts.

January 2001-April 2004. Editor and primary writer of the twice-yearly Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research newsletter, the Tree-Ring Times. Co-founder with LTRR Director Thomas Swetnam.

September 1997-January 2002. Science writer specializing in Global Change research for the University of Arizona News Services, Tucson, working with Science Editor Loraine Stiles.

August 1992-June 1996. Held various positions at The San Juan Star, an English-language daily newspaper based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From June 1993-February 1995, I wrote a weekly Viewpoint column, EcoLogic, covering Puerto Rico’s environmental issues. Other positions included copy editor (1992-1995), Viewpoint assistant editor (1993-1995), and environmental reporter (1995-1996).

Fall 1990. Proofreader, Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve Ecological Research History and Perspective, a 40-page, full-color publication describing research achievements and opportunities at the U.N. Man and the Biosphere Reserve in Guangdong Province, China (Science Press, 1993).

Fall 1989. Copy editor and proofreader, Acta Cientifica (Vol. 2, No. 2-3), an English-language journal published by the Association of Science Teachers, Puerto Rico.

January 1985-July 1987. General reporter and feature writer for The Suburban Life Citizen, a twice-weekly newspaper based in La Grange Park, Illinois, covering Chicago’s western suburbs.

August-December 1984. General reporter, Blue Island Sun-Standard, a twice-weekly newspaper based in Blue Island, Illinois, covering Chicago’s South suburbs.

January 1981-May 1984. Held various positions at The Northern Star, a campus newspaper based at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Semester-long positions included newsroom supervisor, editorial writer, feature writer, health beat reporter and city reporter.
