2001-02 Millennium II Project Description

The goal of the Millennium Project is to enhance the development of an institutional culture at the University of Arizona that fosters productivity, creativity and excellence. The Project supports the university's goal of achieving a climate that will allow all faculty, staff and students to be productive and unhindered by any impediments due to considerations of gender, race/ethnicity, or any other reason.

The UA Millennium Project can serve as a national model for analyzing and improving the status of women in higher education. As a Research I, land-grant, public university, with 1600 faculty, over 8500 staff and appointed personnel, and 34,000 students, the University of Arizona represents a large-scale model of the challenges facing women and minorities in higher education at large. The first phase of the Millennium Project examined the situation of faculty in all colleges. The second phase will examine issues related to both classified staff and appointed personnel. These investigations, while seeking to specifically identify climate issues related to gender, will result in findings and recommendations designed to improve the quality of this workplace for all employees.

Millennium II will be primarily a quantitative analysis of issues relating to climate, working conditions, satisfaction and morale. Information will be gathered, as available, regarding compensation and classification. Comparisons will be made with any comparable studies available, prior to the development of a series of recommendations for action.

The work of Millennium II will be overseen by a Steering Committee made up of representatives of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), Millennium I, University Staff Advisory Council (SAC) and Appointed Personnel Organization Council (APOC). A University Advisory Board comprised of representative stakeholders from throughout the University will meet regularly. A Community Advisory Board comprised of representatives from Southern Arizona will meet at least twice annually to further advise the Project.
