MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY

My name is Carmen Tirado-Paredes I am indigenous from Mexico. I was born in the central highlands of Mexico. My homeland is the Place of the Willow in the state of Guanajuato. I have lived in the United States for most of my life, but I still am connected and keep in close contact with my community. I am fluent in both Spanish and English. I am currently learning my heritage language Nahuatl and Mixtec, both indigenous languages of Mexico.

I am involved in numerous clubs and organization at U of A. I am a member of Omicron Delta Kappa the National Leadership Honor Society, Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Incorporated, WUSHU Chinese Martial Arts Sports Club, Wildcat Pow Wow Society, Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar Chapter, and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan. Through my participation in these clubs I frequently interact with diverse student populations, from Latinas/os, African American, Asian American, to Native American students, faculty and staff. As an undergraduate, I was elected Associated Students President. As the President of the student body, I wrote legislation, conducted needs assessments for the 50+ student programs and increased the student annual budget from just over $500,000 to over $1.3 million. I participated in the Academic Senate, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Planning Committee, California State University Multicultural Council, Vice-President Provost Selection Committees, member of University Center Board of Directors, Humboldt Foundation Board of Directors, Chair of Student Board of Finance, and Chair of Student Instructionally Related Activities Committee. These activities enrich my college experience with diversity.

I am also a veteran of the United States Army. I served with the 129 th Evacuation Hospital in Desert Storm. I was stationed in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. From this experience I learned a great deal about the Arab culture, which was significantly different than the American culture.

My career goal is to teach at the university level. My area of research interest is the indigenous peoples of America. My area of concentration is education. I aspire to pursue research for the advancement of indigenous knowledge and for the amelioration of indigenous communities. I want to be able to offer indigenous peoples of the Americas a place in education by contributing to the development of viable indigenous curriculum especially in heritage language revitalization efforts.

As an undergraduate student, I was in the Indian Teacher and Educational Personnel Program and graduated with a B.A. in Native American Studies at Humboldt State University . From this course of study I prepared myself to work with indigenous communities in the United States . In my Master’s Program, in the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona , my primary focus is the indigenous peoples of Latin America with special interest in the indigenous peoples of Mexico . My secondary focus is in Language, Reading and Culture. This graduate program of study has expanded my area of specialty to work with indigenous peoples of the Americas .

I want to pursue a graduate degree in LRC, because it is the next step in accomplishing my career goal. The LRC graduate program will assist and prepare me to gain the theoretical knowledge and background of Education. I want to earn the M.A. in Bilingual/Multi-Cultural Education and then continue with the Ph.D. in Language, Reading and Culture.
