| | Scientific Program and Submission of Abstracts The scientific program will include sessions on different topics of sinusoidal cell function together with an opening and closing lecture. The scientific communication will be based on oral communications, organized in topic-oriented sessions, together with poster sessions. Projection facilities will be available for 5 x 5 cm slides, 16mm movie films, NTSC videotapes, and PowerPoint presentations. Poster boards will be provided along with material with which to attach the posters.One-page abstracts should be sent together with the enclosed Abstract Submission Form to the local organizers. The deadline for receipt has been extended to 1 June 2002. Abstracts will not be assessed until prepayment is confirmed. Abstracts received after 1 June, but before the beginning of the meeting, will be distributed as Xerox copies and might be presented as posters, if enough space is still available. Instructions for preparation of abstracts are contained in the enclosed Abstract Submission Form. The Scientific Organizing Committee will review the received abstracts and use them to structure the scientific program. Scientific contributions will be grouped for oral or poster presentation. Participants will be informed about this decision by the end of June, 2002. The criterion of relevance to the study of sinusoidal liver cells and/or their relation to other cells will be used most stringently. Submission of an abstract implies agreement for an oral or poster presentation at the meeting. In addition, authors of accepted abstracts are expected to contribute a manuscript to the proceedings of the conference. Instructions for the preparation of the manuscript will be distributed during June 2002. Manuscripts must be delivered at the beginning of the meeting, at the latest, preferable as ASCII (unformatted) files on diskette (floppy disk), prepared on an IBM-PC, Macintosh, or UNIX workstation. The Committee is considering electronic publication of the proceedings in addition to the printed version and as a possible alternate to publishing the book in the future. Electronic publication will occur only with the permission of the authors. The International Organizing Committee is aware of concerns from authors that publication of original findings in the conference book may create conflict with journals concerning dual publication. If this is an issue, your manuscript for the conference proceedings book may be adjusted to include more review information and less original data, providing the main topic of the presentation is covered in the manuscript. The purpose of the book is to provide a survey of the present work of basic and clinical research teams, active in the field of hepatic sinusoidal cells. Accepted abstracts will form the basis of the scientific program. Sessions will preferably be introduced by tutorial reviews. Those authors willing to extend their contribution in this way are invited to indicate this on their application form, at the same time providing a short description of their proposed tutorial. Topics include: Cell/cell interactions; Endotoxin/mediators; Oncology/metastasis; Fibrosis/cirrhosis; Viral hepatitis; Pathology/toxicology; Development/regeneration; and others as determined by the abstracts received. The opening lecture on Sunday, 25 August will be delivered by Professor Kenjiro Wake, Tokyo, and will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the death of Karl von Kupffer. The Kupffer Prize The Kupffer Cell Foundation will sponsor the Kupffer Prize for Sinusoidal Cell Research. This new prize of € 1,000 is established to promote scientific research in the field of hepatic sinusoidal cells. The prize will be awarded at the opening session of a symposium on 'Cells of the Hepatic Sinusoid.' The rules governing the prize are as follows: - Five candidates for the prize will be selected from the abstracts submitted for the Symposium. Selection will be performed by the International Scientific Organizing Committee during its pre-meeting.
- The candidates will be informed about their selection and will be invited to compete for the Kupffer Prize by submitting an extended application.
- Applications should contain a resume (CV), a list of publications, and reprints of five publications that best support the candidature. In principle, the candidate should be the first author of these publications.
- Applications should be received at the Secretariat of the Kupffer Cell Foundation in Brussels before 1 July 2002, preceding the symposium in August 2002. The selection of the candidates should be ready on 1 August 2002.
- Candidates will be evaluated by the International Scientific Organizing Committee on the basis of the written applications.
- The prize of € 1,000 will be awarded on the basis of the quality and originality of scientific achievements in the field of sinusoidal cells, preferably obtained during the five years preceding the application.
- The successful candidate is required to attend the Symposium on Cells of the Hepatic Sinusoid and to deliver a keynote address during one of the plenary sessions. The nominee also is expected to contribute a reviewing paper to the proceedings.
- An additional objective of the Kupffer Prize is to support a scientist at a stage of his/her career at which the award will have a maximal impact on his/her future.
Travel Award The American Association of Anatomists has provided an Outreach Grant to provide assistance to five (5) young investigators ($500 each) in subsidizing their travel, registration, and lodging expenses.
