Central Works in Technical Communication |
|
Edited
by Johndan Johnson-Eilola & Stuart Selber, Central Works brings thirty-two
landmark essays. Central Works in Technical Communication provides a broad
and representative overview of the field. It introduces students, new
teachers, and new practitioners to the community of technical communication
as an intellectual and communal endeavor that encompasses such complex
theoretical topics as research methods, social issues, and ethics. Editors
Johndan Johnson-Eilola and Stuart A. Selber engaged in a comprehensive
selection process--including the consultation of a review board of leading
teachers and scholars--and have included some of the most influential
articles and book chapters published in technical communication over the
last twenty-five years. Each essay is accompanied by a reflective piece
written by its author specifically for this volume. These commentaries
provide context for the essays and allow the authors to add to or challenge
their original ideas and resituate them in a contemporary environment.
The book also features section introductions written by the editors that
offer historical and conceptual approaches to understanding the contributions
each work makes to the field of technical communication. Own this brand new copy! Soft cover edition. Donated by Johndan

Life on the Screen First Edition Hardback signed by Sherry Turkle |
|
Life
on the Screen First Edition Hardback signed by Sherry Turkle. Life on the Screen is a book not about computers, but about people and how computers are causing us to reevaluate our identities in the age of the Internet. We are using life on the screen to engage in new ways of thinking about evolution, relationships, politics, sex, and the self. Life
on the Screen traces a set of boundary negotiations, telling the story
of the changing impact of the computer on our psychological lives and
our evolving ideas about minds, bodies, and machines. What is emerging,
Turkle says, is a new sense of identity--as de-centered and multiple.
She describes trends in computer design, in artificial intelligence, and
in people's experiences of virtual environments that confirm a dramatic
shift in our notions of self, other, machine, and world. The computer
emerges as an object that brings postmodernism down to earth. |

Eloquent Images : Word and Image in the Age of New Media |
|
2003
edited collection by Hocks and Kendrick, published by MIT Press. The emergence of New Media has stimulated debate about the power of the visual to dethrone the cultural prominence of textuality and print. Some scholars celebrate the proliferation of digital images, arguing that it suggests a return to a pictorial age when knowledge was communicated through images as well as through words. Others argue that the inherent conflict between texts and images creates a battleground between the feminized, seductive power of images and the masculine rationality of the printed word. Eloquent Images suggests that these debates misunderstand the dynamic interplay that has always existed between word and image. Arguing that the complex relationship between text and image in New Media does not represent a radical rupture from the past, the book examines rhetorical and cultural uses of word and image both historically and currently. It shows that complex, interpenetrating relationships between verbal and visual communication systems were already evident in hieroglyphLL shipping costs are covered by the donor. |

The Formation of College English Rhetoric and Belles Lettres in the British Cultural Provinces |
|
Co-Winner
of the 1998 MLA Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize "Presents detailed original research into the social and intellectual histories of rhetoric and composition. Beginning with the earliest teachers and students of English in the eighteenth century, Miller gives us significant insights into the complex and over determined workings of cultural hegemony. . . . His argument shows how rhetorical and literary education in eighteenth and nineteenth century English provinces resulted from philosophical, social, cultural, and political vectors. . . . Writing Program Administrator as Theorist: Making Knowledge Work |
|
The
essays in this collection inhabit that space between theory and practice,
between "knowing that" and "knowing how" in the high-stakes
world of budgetary planning, programmatic development, and curricular innovation.
An excellent companion to Shirley K Rose and Irwin Weiser's first book, The Writing Program Administrator as Researcher (Boynton/Cook, 1999), this new volume foregrounds the intellectual work of WPAs. It is divided into two parts, "Theorizing Our Writing Programs" and "Theorizing Writing Program Administration." New copy.Editors will sign and inscribe as requested by winning bidder. Effective Writing: A Handbook with Stories for Lawyers |
|
By
John Phelps Warnock with Harold C. Warnock, Effective Writing offers specific
advice on how to write effectively the many kinds of writing lawyers do
in actual practice. It considers what makes writing effective in letters
of various kinds, forms, bills, the many kinds of writing done through the
trial, writing for an appeal, contracts, and writing for wills and trusts.
The last chapter addresses how to rewrite to promote more effective thinking
and how to rewrite for the reader, going beyond the usual considerations
of correct or “plain” style to address what constitutes effective
word choice, sentence structure, organization, citation and quotation in
real contexts. The book is seasoned with “sidebars”—brief
stories about legal writing from many judges, lawyers, and other writers--
that help to bring the world of legal writing alive. This book is the product
of a collaboration between a distinguished lawyer and a professor of English
(Rhetoric and Writing). For more details, visit http://www.parlorpress.com/cwauction.html Own this new copy signed by John Warnock! Donated byJohn Warnock University of Arizona AND Tilly Warnock University of Arizona Exceptional deal for the buyer: ALL shipping costs are covered by the donor. |

Frame Analysis: An Essay on the Organization of Experience |
|
Frame
Analysis: An Essay on the Organization of Experience by Erving. Goffman. 1974. Tom Burns describes Frame Analysis as "Goffman's longest and most ambitious book. It is about how we shape and compartmentalise our experience of life and of the world of objects and events around us, and about how the experiencing and acting self, too, can be compartmentalised into a series of part-selves, each a potential factor in the production of experience for ourselves and for others." Again, the metaphor of theatre and stage management is used to explain how this compartmentalisation is accomplished and why it is necessary. Own this slightly woren 1st edition copy. The Violence of Literacy |
|
The
Violence of Literacy by J. Elspeth Stuckey. This book is a must read . . . J. Elspeth Stuckey cogently exposes how literacy in this country, as both a "skill" and a profession, is used to perpetuate privilege, disadvantage, and injustice. --Harvard Educational
Review This is a book for
anyone who thinks that reading and writing are important to learning.
In this respect, it's a book for everyone, but it's primarily for people
on the hotseat—English teachers, especially composition/writing/rhetoric
teachers, and teachers of dropouts and adults and minorities. The book
addresses economics and social class, the political structure in which
English teaching fits, the character of labor, the psychology or psychotherapy
of literacy, and the future of social freedom in America. |

Rhetorical Democracy: Discursive Practices of Civic Engagement |

Rhetorical
Democracy: Discursive Practices of Civic Engagement by Gerard A. Hauser
and Amy Grim (both U. of Colorado) present a selection of papers from a
May 2002 conference held in Las Vegas and attended by 400-plus scholars
from eight nations, examining what it means to practice democracy in the
21st century. Thirty-nine contributions are organized into sections of plenary
papers, the rhetoric of 9/11 and its aftermath, and selected papers. A sampling
of topics: rhetorical democracy and civic engagement, citizen voices in
cyberpolitical culture, the triumph of consolatory ritual over deliberation
since 9/11, the civil disobedients of poetry slams, the rhetorical display
of "publicness" in global institutions, and tyrannical technology
and thin democracy. Own this brand new copy! Donated by Theresa Enos University of Arizona Exceptional deal for the buyer: ALL shipping costs are covered by the donor. |

Redemption CD by Elaine Townsend |
|
Elaine
Townsend may have opened shows for the likes of Fleetwood Mac and k.d. Lang,
but Redemption finds her in a more fitting element: namely, performing for
an intimate venue for a small clutch of fans and admirers. Getting help
from such luminaries as Danielle Howle and Hootie and the Blowfish drummer
Jim "Soni" Sonefeld, the Columbia, SC based Townsend writes acoustic-based
folk songs that cut a wide swath through the genre. Whether offering up
hymn-like, sax-laced folk pop ("Midnight garden") or plunky Delta
blues ("Longing to Belong"), Townsend strikes a perfect balance
between soulful intensity and understated humor. High points on Redemption include the beautiful, lounge-tinged "La Luna" (which features Howle on background Vocals), the gently waltzing "Flame of Devotion", and a syncopated, dead-on version of Talking Heads' "slippery people" that would put a smile on the face of David Byrne. Far from being a strident performer, Townsend instead shows the grace and confidence to let her songs speak for themselves. -Performing Songwriter- Description from http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/etownsend.
