Cheryl Ball’s Famous Poundcake and Recipe
Why is Cheryl grimacing? She just decided to turn over an old family recipe! She also will bake and send you one of her famous poundcakes as part of her incredible donation.

Cheryl explains that "this is an old family recipe, passed on from my cousin Elizabeth, who swears it’s the perfect cake for funerals and potlucks (being from the South, those two things often collide). This poundcake is super-moist, dense, buttery, not overly sweet, with a hint of something special, and is very easy to make. One bundt cake weighs about six pounds and will last up to two weeks stored on the counter. Great for nibbling. Marilyn Cooper refuses to come to the weekly potluck if I don’t bring this cake. I will bake you a cake, ship it to you, and include detailed instructions for baking your own."

Matthew Bunce and Marjorie Hebert's Free Dinner
Hungry? Look for great food and fun? Matthew and Marjorie want to take the lucky winner out to Alan Wong's on Thursday, June 10 at 7:00 pm. Alan Wong's is located at 1857 S King St Ste 3, Honolulu, HI 96826-2172.

The Scene: This huge, glass-terraced restaurant provides an almost mystical ambience, setting the stage for a cutting edge menu of Japanese, Hawaiian and American cuisine. Service is impeccable, and the open kitchen (inspired by Wolfgang Puck's Spago,) sends wafting scents of spicy flavors throughout the dining room.

The Food: Alan Wong goes out of his way to ensure that food is unique with a menu that changes daily. An impressive wine list is remarkably up to date with California and Washington whites. Creative dishes feature fresh local
blends, including Kauai purple potatoes and Kalua Pork. Opihi shooters, (which resemble oysters) are outstanding when in season. If you're fortunate enough to try fresh furikake salmon, you may never eat at another restaurant in Oahu. Be sure to save room for incredible desserts,
including light sorbets or the famed "Crunch Bar" that consists of layers of chocolate, macadamia nuts and mousse.

Central Works in Technical Communication

Edited by Johndan Johnson-Eilola & Stuart Selber, Central Works brings thirty-two landmark essays. Central Works in Technical Communication provides a broad and representative overview of the field. It introduces students, new teachers, and new practitioners to the community of technical communication as an intellectual and communal endeavor that encompasses such complex theoretical topics as research methods, social issues, and ethics. Editors Johndan Johnson-Eilola and Stuart A. Selber engaged in a comprehensive selection process--including the consultation of a review board of leading teachers and scholars--and have included some of the most influential articles and book chapters published in technical communication over the last twenty-five years. Each essay is accompanied by a reflective piece written by its author specifically for this volume. These commentaries provide context for the essays and allow the authors to add to or challenge their original ideas and resituate them in a contemporary environment. The book also features section introductions written by the editors that offer historical and conceptual approaches to understanding the contributions each work makes to the field of technical communication.

Tracing Genres through Organizations: A Sociocultural Approach to Information Design
tracing_genres_through_organizations Clay Spinuzzi examines the everyday improvisations by workers who deal with designed information and shows how understanding this impromptu creation can improve information design. He argues that the traditional user-centered approach to design does not take into consideration the unofficial genres that spring up as workers write notes, jot down ideas, and read aloud from an officially designed text.

Community Action and Organizational Change: Image, Narrative, Identity
“This is an excellent book! It is well conceived, beautifully written, and compelling in its case for using narratives to reconnect universities to their communities. . . .This book has potential to be considered an important, ground-breaking study in the area of community studies and organizational studies.”

—H. L. Goodall Jr., author of Casing a Promised Land: The Autobiography of an Organizational Detective as Cultural Ethnographer

Brenton D. Faber’s spirited account of an academic consultant’s journey through banks, ghost towns, cemeteries, schools, and political campaigns explores the tenuous relationships between cultural narratives and organizational change.

Blending Faber’s firsthand experiences in the study and implementation of change with theoretical discussions of identity, agency, structure, and resistance within contexts of change, this innovative book is among the first such communications studies to profile a scholar who is also a full participant in the projects. Drawing on theories of Michel Foucault, Anthony Giddens, and Pierre Bourdieu, Faber notes that change takes place in the realm of narrative, in the stories people tell.

Faber argues that an organization’s identity is created through internal stories. When the organization’s internal stories are consistent with its external stories, the organization’s identity is consistent and productive. When internal stories contradict the external stories, however, the organization’s identity becomes discordant. Change is the process of realigning an organization’s discordant narratives.

Faber discusses the case studies of a change management plan he wrote for a city-owned cemetery, a cultural change project he created for a downtown trade school, and a political campaign he assisted that focused on creating social change. He also includes detailed reflections on practical ways academics can become more involved in their communities as agents of progressive social change. Featuring six illustrations, Faber’s unique study demonstrates in both style and substance how stories work as agents of change.

Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication
Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication offers a variety of activities, projects, and approaches to energize pedagogy in technical communication and to provide a constructive critique of current practice. A practical collection, the approaches recommended here are readily adaptable to a range of technological and institutional contexts, as well as being theoretically grounded and pedagogically sound. Throughout the collection, its editors and contributors demonstrate the importance of critically engaging students through creative and innovative pedagogies.

Programs in technical writing, technical communication, and/or professional communication have recently grown in enrollment as the demand among employers for formally prepared technical writers and editors has grown. In response, scholarly treatments of the subject and the teaching of technical writing are also burgeoning, and the body of research and theory being published in this field is many times larger and more accessible than it was even a decade ago.

Although many theoretical and disciplinary perspectives can potentially inform technical communication teaching, administration, and curriculum development, the actual influences on the field's canonical texts have traditionally come from a rather limited range of disciplines. Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication brings together a wide range of scholars/teachers to expand the existing canon.

The editors and authors in this volume suggest that, for various reasons, the field has not been as flexible or open to innovation as it needs to be. Given pervasive technological and workplace changes and changing cultural attitudes, they say, new and more dynamic pedagogies in technical communication are warranted, and they are addressing this collection to that need. Contributing authors include a number of scholars with a strong record of work in composition, technical writing, professional communication, and allied areas (e.g., Selfe, Wahlstrom, Kalmbach, Duin, Hansen), who deliver a variety of approaches that are grounded in current theory and represent pedagogical creativity and innovation.

Dànielle Nicole DeVoss' Dissertation
You, the lucky winner of this amazing auction item, will be delivered a mint edition of my dissertation.

This precious item works wonderful for propping up data projectors, acting as a door stop; serving as a formidable weapon; and/or serving as kindling on those long, cold, winter nights. You may also want to keep this as an impressive tool with which to make fun of me once I'm rich and famous. As a bonus, you get pictures of naked people, since I wrote a chapter on porn sites!

The Formation of College English Rhetoric and Belles Lettres in the British Cultural Provinces
Co-Winner of the 1998 MLA Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize

"Presents detailed original research into the social and intellectual histories of rhetoric and composition. Beginning with the earliest teachers and students of English in the eighteenth century, Miller gives us significant insights into the complex and over determined workings of cultural hegemony. . . . His argument shows how rhetorical and literary education in eighteenth and nineteenth century English provinces resulted from philosophical, social, cultural, and political vectors. . . . "

Composition Studies in the New Millennium: Rereading the Past, Rewriting the Future
Edited by Lynn Z. Bloom, Donald A. Daiker, and Edward M. White.

A collection of twenty-four essays assessing and challenging the current state of writing instruction, Composition Studies in the New Millennium: Rereading the Past, Rewriting the Future emerges from presentations given at the national Writing Program Administrators conference held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 2001. Like its acclaimed and widely-used predecessor, Composition in the Twenty-First Century: Crisis and Change, this timely collection by leading scholars in composition studies responds to concerns about the evolution and future of this field of study.

Charting new directions, the contributors grapple with seven distinct questions: What do we mean by composition studies—past, present, and future? What do and should we teach when we teach composition? Where will composition be taught, and who will teach it? What theories and philosophies will underand they do so with a style and organization appropriate for composition instructors, scholars, and administrators at all levels, from teaching assistants to college presidents. The result is an invaluable vision of the future of composition studies in the new millennium.

J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century
Recent polls have consistently declared that J.R.R. Tolkien is "the most influential author of the century," and The Lord of the Rings is "the book of the century." In support of these claims, the prominent medievalist and scholar of fantasy Professor Tom Shippey now presents us with a fascinating companion to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, focusing in particular on The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. The core of the book examines The Lord of the Rings as a linguistic and cultural map and as a response to the meaning of myth. It presents a unique argument to explain the nature of evil and also gives the reader a compelling insight into the unparalleled level of skill necessary to construct such a rich and complex story. Shippey also examines The Hobbit, explaining the hobbits' anachronistic relationship to the heroic world of Middle-earth, and shows the fundamental importance of The Silmarillion to the canon of Tolkien's work. He offers as well an illuminating look at other, lesser-known works in their connection to Tolkien's life.

The Road to Middle-earth, Tom Shippey’s classic work, now revised in paperback, explores J.R.R. Tolkien’s creativity and the sources of his inspiration. Shippey shows in detail how Tolkien’s professional background led him to write The Hobbit and how he created a timeless charm for millions of readers. Examining the foundation of Tolkien’s most popular work, The Lord of the Rings, Shippey also discusses the contribution of The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales to Tolkien’s great myth cycle, showing how Tolkien’s more “difficult” books can be fully appreciated. He goes on to examine the remarkable twelve-volume History of Middle-earth, written by Tolkien’s son and literary heir Christopher Tolkien, which traces the creative and technical processes by which Middle-earth evolved. Awards: 1984 Mythopoeic Scholarship Award in Inkling Studies

Handpainted Tabby Cat Bowl
Soup/cereal bowl with tabby cat on dark blue background. This bowl is also a good feeding dish for cats--even those cats who insist on pawing the edges of their bowls, spilling their food and water. The shape and weight of the bowl make it hard for a cat to tilt it.

Handpainted and signed by Tari Fanderclai. See samples of my work here: http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~tari/pottery

Handpainted Ceramic Serving Bowl Commission
If you win this item, I'll paint this bowl for you. The bowl is about 4 inches deep, and about 9 inches across at the top. It's a great size for a serving bowl, but its tapered shape also makes for a beautiful fruit bowl or decorative bowl. You and I will discuss color, design, and so forth, as with any commission, so that the finished piece will suit whatever purpose you have in mind.

And if you're the winning bidder, when I'm finished, I'll ship the bowl to you.

Not sure you trust me? See samples of my work here: http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~tari/pottery

Your mug will be microwave and dishwasher safe.

Allow six weeks for me to paint, fire, and ship your bowl to you.

Customized Handpainted Dessert Plates
If you win this item, you'll name four colors that I have to use in painting these four ceramic plates. Each plate will be different, but they'll be tied together by your color scheme. Your color choices can "go together" or not--it'll be up to me to make them work in the set.

Not sure you trust me? See samples of my work here: http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~tari/pottery

Your plates will be microwave and dishwasher safe.

Plates are square, and approximately 8 inches--a good size for sandwiches, snacks, desserts, etc. The corners curve up very slightly. (Some people call this design a "sushi plate.")

Allow six weeks for me to paint, fire, and ship your plates to you.

Surprise Mug

No, the surprise isn't that the mug isn't painted. The surprise will be the way it looks when you get it!

That's because I'm going to walk up to the color tile board at the pottery studio, close my eyes, grab three tiles at random, and use those colors to paint this mug.

And if you're the winning bidder, when I'm finished, I'll ship the mug to you.

Not sure you trust me? See samples of my work here: http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~tari/pottery

Favorite Color Mug
Well, it's not your favorite color yet. First you have to be the winning bidder. Then you'll tell me your favorite color, and I'll paint your mug using as many shades of that color as I can. Or tell me someone else's favorite color, and get a one-of-a-kind gift for that person.

Not sure you trust me? See samples of my work here: http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~tari/pottery

Adjective Mug
What's an adjective mug? Here's how to find out: First, you have to win this mug. Then, you'll give me three adjectives that you want to be able to use to describe the mug after I paint it for you.

And if you're the winning bidder, when I'm finished, I'll ship the mug to you.

Not sure you trust me? See samples of my work here: http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~tari/pottery

Fragum Shell Choker
A natural crazy-cut Fragum shell choker, with a Lisway skeleton-rib pendant, to remind you of Hawaii, whether you are able to go this year or not! The Fragum shell pieces are polished but squarish, with corners, and so this choker might be most comfortable worn with a shirt between it and your skin, although I do know people who are just fine with this on their bare neck. Perhaps a light white or black turtleneck in the winter, to remind you of warm sand and turquoise waters? The choker is 15 inches long, but the length can be adjusted somewhat, of course; it fastens with gold lobster clasp.

Please see Sharon's webpage for her other lovely jewelry: http://condor.stcloudstate.edu/~scogdill/jewelry.html. Also, visit the "fun" section of the auction website for more of Sharon's work up for auction.

2 for 1 Men's Large Hawaiian Shirts
Two for the price of.... Well, for whatever price you can get them at!

These shirts appear to be either new or lightly used, in excellent condition. The shirt on the right is by Henry Grethel Studio, 65% cotton, 35% rayon, made in British Hong Kong. Size unknown, although it appears to be men's large.

The shirt on the left has a tag that simply says "54" (the size)--no other information is available, but it feels more "rayon-y" than Shirt #1, and appears to be men's size large.

Colorful and comfortable--these shirts would make great beach cover-ups, cool and comfortable sports wear, or .... well, I'll let YOU think of other great uses.

NICE shirts!!

Wine-glass Charms
I have a collection called "Defense against Evil Spirits," and the charms are three pewter gargoyles and a garlic bulb. With a few colorful beads, each one goes on a tiny memory-wire ring that will fit around the stem of a wine glass, to help guests remember which glass is theirs. (The images are very slightly smaller than actual size.)

Custom-designed Bracelet

Picture Not Available--See above for examples of Sharon's work and visit her website for more samples: http://condor.stcloudstate.edu/~scogdill/jewelry.html

Custom bracelet made of tiny silver-lined glass beads, netted into a cuff that fits snugly against your wrist. A netted piece that shows the design itself is available, and we can work together on the beads, the thread (I suggest Gossamer Floss, so the bracelet is slightly elastic), and the finish (how about a custom PMC rose as a closure? or vintage German beads?). Or perhaps you'd like a beaded bracelet with a watch? We'll work together to get you exactly the piece you'd like.

Allow until June 5, 2004 for me to complete and ship your earrings to you.

Custom-designed Earrings

Picture Not Available--See above for examples of Sharon's work and visit her website for more samples: http://condor.stcloudstate.edu/~scogdill/jewelry.html

Custom earrings made from semiprecious stones or fine Italian glass to your specifications. You choose the style of earring (post, French wire, etc.,) and the metal (gold or silver). You choose the stone (lapis lazuli, malachite, amythest, pearl) or bead (I suggest the Italian gold- or silver-foil-lined beads). You decide how long you want it to be. If I don't have the stones you like, we'll find them. We'll work together until it's just the way you want them.

Allow until June 5, 2004 for me to complete and ship your earrings to you.

Vintage 1994 Official Computers & Writing Conference T-shirt

Travel back in time to the year 1994, when Computers & Writing specialists met in Columbia, MO, for their annual conference. Mosaic was still King of the Browsers, Netscape was just a gleam in the eye of Marc Andreesen and Jim Clark, and Bill Gates still thought the web was a fad.

C&W '94 was the first year for Official Conference T-Shirts (as far as I know). This shirt is an original, authentic, actual conference t-shirt, owned by the program chair of the 1994 conference.

Its famous design (a collaboration between Judy Williamson and me) is dusty rose (ok, pink) with teal (more or less) lettering. On the front left breast is the Daedalus logo (Daedalus underwrote much of the cost of the shirts) and the words:

Daedalus MOO
logos.daedalus.com 7777

Tenth Annual
Computers &
Writing Conference
May 20-23, 1994
Columbia, MO

On the back, the well-known MOO command: @describe me as "a techno-rhetorician"

This shirt is no namby-pamby mint-condition museum piece (though it should be in a museum, if only C&W had one) but is a fully functioning, somewhat faded, well-worn t-shirt, a little frayed in places, with few very small holes in the shoulder seams and under the arms. It's been worn
regularly for 10 years by various members of the actual Crump family.

The tag is missing (due to the fact that some members of the Crump family have Tag Issues) but it's believed to be an XL or XXL size shirt.
