Ships

Mos of the ships that I've created in 3D applications started out as sketches on paper. Here you can see the ships that I've designed and sometimes what inspired them. Many of these ships have rendered versions which can be seen in my Artwork section of Works.

The Dragonian Battleship was one of the first ships I came up with. The concept for this actually came the Mon Calimari cruisers from Star Wars.

The destroyer concept was simply a scaled down version of the Dragonian Battleship.

Trying to follow along with a similar design scheme the Dragonian Carrier. Because fo the age of the drawing I can't remember if anything else inspired the side launch bays.

The corvette class ship was based off a scaled down version of the carrier, minus the launch bays. The original drawing can be seen on the left while a more recent drawing done by my brother is the picture above.

The Aglimon temple ship was something that was inspired by a total conversion someone did of a game called EV: Nova. The convertion was called Polycon and had a temple ship that had a similar design that I more or less adapted to fit the religious needs of the Aglimon Empire.

The Aroñi cloak cruiser really resemples a flying wing. Something that I gave to Aroñi to make them special was cloaking technology. I was always a big fan of Star Trek but always wondered why cloaked ships couldn't fire. The only thing I could think of was energy drain so I made the Aroñi ships rely heavily on missile technology, something that doesn't really require extra power to fire.

I admit, the computer game Homeworld played a large role in this ship's design. I really liked the idea of a tall ship as opposed to the typical long flat ship that most sci-fi uses and the Kushan mothership was an ideal base for the Cuth'lin destroyer. Trying to add to its distinctiveness I added the fighter bay to the bottom of the ship by cutting out a section of it.

Similar to the B-Wing of Star Wars the Cuth'lin fighters were interesting for me to design. The main note was that I threw the cockpit off to one side of the main engine which would give the pilot a different feel for flight. The location of the weapons also add a more interesting feel. While the design doesn't seem practical for humans who knows what aliens would think of it.

The Gathrinar ships started out as an idea of how ocean vessel designs could be adapted for steller travel. The dreadnought here follows the basic design of any naval battleship with deck guns. Adaptions added more turreted guns and fighter bays to the sides of the ship allowing for more coverage of the bottom and sides during combat.

The Gathrinar fighters were adaptations from normal sci-fi fighters. I added two sets of directional thrusters to the top and bottom of the ship allowing it to actually turn in space since the wings are only useful for weapon mountings.

The ship design for the Kil'tor really was something that just sort of appeared on paper. I can't remember thinking of anything in particular when I came up with the ship but it seems to fit an insecticoid race.

When I first described the Lith-Igno I mentioned that they didn't have AG fields forcing rotating sections of the hull. Looking back on it the heavy cruiser here was really based off the Omega class destroyers from Babylon 5.

Continuing with the rotating theme I gave the Lith-Igno fighters a rotating outer ring which contained additional weapons as well as several directional thrusters around the outer section.

The Alerian Battlecruiser here was initially inspired by the asymetrical design of the Vayger destroyer from Homeworld 2. The rounded main section also relates back to Dragonian designs.

In a scaled down version of the Alerian Battlecruiser, the Cruiser itself carries the same blocky protrusion from the rounded surface of the ship.

The Alerian fighter was again inspired by the design of Vayger craft from Homeworld 2, as well as continuing the asymetrical feel of the ships.
