Alerians: Government |
|
Following their Imperial traditions the Alerian Galactic Imperium is still ruled over by a single Emperor who's lineage, while sketchy, can be traced back to a time just after the Second War of Power, nearly 2000 years ago. The Emperor is a major figure in Alerian life and reveared as the divine incarnation of the Source sent to guide the Alerian people. This belief is rather new and was one of the contributing factors of unrest between the Alerains and the Dragonians leading up to the Great Schism. The Imperial Court has kept some tight reins on the government by allowing each system to have a single localized governmental office. Beyond the system seat the next step down are city councils. By limiting the lower levels to local affairs the Imperial Court, consisting of the Emperor and twelve advisors, controls everything in regards to the Empire. The Emperor rules until the age of 65, at which point he is expected to abdicate the throne and hand it over the heir. When an Emperor stands down or dies a new one must be appointed immediately. Unless something happens, the Emperor's first born male is raised to eventually assume the role of Emperor. As a result of the Imperial nature of the government, certain families close the Imperial family have grown in wealth and power. These Houses usually act as a secondary, unofficial, advisory council. In their constant effort to gain more power Houses throughout the Empire will work to secure more power usually by undermining another Houses power. As a result internal affairs have sometimes worked towards the detriment of external affairs. |
