Computer Games: Homeworld |

Homeworld is a revolutionary
RTS game that I feel was overlooked when game developers moved the genre
on. Homeworld, produced by Sierra Entertainment came
out in 1999 just one year after Starcraft,
which was produced by Sierra's sister company Blizzard
Entertainment. Homeworld was a space based RTS and actually utilized
a completely 3D world viewable from any angle. Ships could move in three
dimensions allowing for some interesting tactics of bringing your fleet
up from underneath your opponent's.

The graphics for this game
are quite good considering it is completely 3D and came out in 1999.
The biggest downfall for the game I can think of is that unlike Starcraft
and other games of the time Homeworld had a much slower pace, resources
were gathered slowly, ships moved slowly and it could take five minutes
for a good sized fleet to get across the map to attack your target.

Combat is rather intersting. Attack vessels come in various sizes ranging from small fighters with rapid fireing mass drivers to massive cruisers with powerful ion cannons. Fleets of ships engaging other fleets is truely a sight to see, hopefully I'll get a screen shot posted of one. Fleet combat feels truely epic, however, as you see fighters dodgeing between ships, frigates unloading their payload of ordanence and heavy cruisers plowing through enemy ships with their colourful ion cannons that are reminiscent of beam weapons from Babylon 5. For information on ships visit Well of Souls shipyard. |
