THINGS TO EXPECT When trekking in the desert be prepared to encounter desert wildlife as they may come across your path. Coyotes are very common in southern Arizona, and although rarely attack humans should be regarded with caution. Rattlesnakes are also very common in the southwest and are too avoided at all costs as they are deadly and can result in death. Mountain lions are also present in southern Arizona although it is very rare to encounter them as they are wary of humans. Mountain lions are dangerous animals, and if encountered should be regarded with extreme caution. These are just some of the more dangerous animals that live in the desert, most all other animals are not regarded as dangerous and should not evoke fear. -It should be known that if a mountain lion is encountered DO NOT RUN or turn your back as that may provoke an attack. Stand your ground and try to appear bigger than you are and usually the predator will flee. Even if you are attacked a mountain lion will usually retreat under a sustained defense of an adult human. -If a rattlesnake is encountered STAY AWAY and walk around the reptile. This should prevent a hiker from being bitten. If you are bitten you should seek medical assistance immediately by using your cellphone or traveling to the nearest hospital. |
