Discussion Section Overview

We will meet once a week to discuss issues which arise in the main lecture and the assigned readings in the text and coursepack. Since the lecture is not conducive to discussion, it is expected that you bring your questions and comments to the discussion section. Participation accounts for 20% of your final grade and will be based on three components: (1) lecture essays; (2) weekly journal assignments; and (3) active participation in section discussions.

Weekly Journal Assignments: We will use current international events to illustrate theories, concepts and terms found in the lectures and readings. Students are expected to turn in one journal article a week. The subject of the article will be assigned in advance and will provide a basis for discussion during section meetings as well as a means of tracking attendance. You may use whatever news sources you are familiar with except the Daily Wildcat. The New York Times is recommended, and you are also encouraged to use the Internet, or any national daily paper. You are expected to turn in two pieces of paper each discussion section meeting: (1) the news article with your name and section number; (2) a one paragraph summary of the article answering the question posed, with your name and section number.

Listserve: An Internet listserve has been created to facilitate communication and discussion in my sections. If you don't have a UofA e-mail address, please create one, see the Schedule of Classes for help. Directions on joining the listserve:

send this command: SUB POL120 your name

to: listserv@listserv.arizona.edu

example: SUB POL120 John Smith

Remember that notes posted to the listserve are distributed to all members. I will post class assignments and information on the listserve, and you may use the listserve to discuss the readings and lecture material as well as current events
