Here it is, activism for credit. Give five hours to a social movement organization and see what movements look like from the inside. Of course, I also want to hear a little about what you've done, so you'll have to summarize your experience too. It's a small price to pay. What better way to learn about movements than to be in one?

Instructions: I'll leave it to you to choose a social movement organization (SMO) that interests you. Suffice it to say that volunteers are a valued resource for most SMOs, particularly professional ones. Call them up, arrange for one or two days - a minimum of 5 hours - that you could work with them. You might be stuffing envelopes, setting up an event, doing research, making phone calls, or any number of things. Most importantly, you'll be seeing the inner workings of a genuine, real life SMO. Summarize your volunteer experience in 4-5 pages.

Tucson has a bunch of great organizations that could use your help, many of which are listed on the resources page of this website.

Your summary should report the name of the organization, a little bit about its history, goals, tactics, strategies, and structure (large or small, centralized or decentralized, bureaucratic or informal?). Also, tell me what you did there - what was it like and what did you learn? Now think like a sociologist and consider how well the theories we've studied - classical, resource mobilization, political process - help us to understand how and why these social movement participants behave the ways they do. In what ways do these theories accurately reflect your observations of this organization? Alternatively, are these theories overlooking any aspects of participants, organizations, or movements that you find to be important? In other words, would the theorists we've studied be surprised by anything you observed? Lastly, consider what lessons from social movement theories might help this SMO to improve its effectiveness. What do you think is holding this organization back from being more effective? As always, be thorough and concise.
