historical vegetarianism? 150 points Bourgeois charity or radical feminism? The protection of animals has, since the early 1800s, been dominated by women, some of whom were elites, many were feminists with a history in other women's campaigns of the time. At what point did animal protectionism shift from the "humane use" of animals to the abolition of research on them? What was the role of religion in early animal protectionism? In which countries did animal protectionism first emerge?
Instructions: Hit the books to learn as much as you can about the origins of the Animal Protection Movement. Summarize your findings in a 4-5 page paper that discusses, from a sociological perspective: 1) the movement's organization (i.e., who was organizing what?); and 2) the social context in which it arose (i.e., when, where, and take a stab at why did this movement emerge?). Tilly (2004) and Tarrow (1998; chs. 3-4), both good examples of the sociological perspective, will make useful models for your research. What kinds of factors do they focus on when explaining the context for movement emergence? Do you see the same or similar factors in the emergence of the animal protection movement? Other questions you might like to focus on: In what ways do the conservative and radical parts of the contemporary animal protection movement differ - goals, strategies, tactics? Keep your eyes open for the distinction between animal "welfare" and animal "rights." |
