14. reached out: inclined (13) has both its primary,
physical sense, 'bend toward' (L. inclino,
'lean, bend') and also a metaphorical sense, 'have an inclination, bend
one's will towards.' The flight of Milton's dream wife recalls the
moment of tragic loss when Orpheus falters and Eurydice returns to the
underworld, as told by Ovid, in the Metamorphoses,
"He stretched out his arms, eager to catch her or to feel her clasp;
but, unhappy one, he clasped nothing but the yielding air" (10.58-59).
