4. Alcestis (2): In a play by the Greek tragic dramatist Euripides, Alcestis gives up her life for her husband, Admetus, by dying in his place. The hero and demigod Hercules (Jove's great Son in line 3) wrestles with death and brings her back from the grave. At first, Admetus does not recognize her, because she is veild (10), and because she is like a ghost, pale and faint (4: Euripides, Alcestis 1127).
