Short written responses to course assignments and readings,
usually to be delivered in the form of a memo. Topics we will
study include theories of professional discourse and rhetoric,
case studies, and simulations requiring documents. |

Term Project
(5 separate parts)
Preparing a Case Study: “Professional Writing and
Critical Cultural Analysis” |
After reading case studies, students, in groups of 2 to
4, will locate a site of interest, research and analyze it,
and then create their own case study of this professional
writing situation. Specific elements of the project include:
• a topic/conflict proposal that includes a detailed
description (the problem, the players, the location, fields
and professional discourses and ethical systems involved)—10%,
6 points
• analysis of a document or documents—10%, 6 points
• cultural interview of a writing professional(s) with
knowledge of this situation—20%, 12 points
• written report of cultural and ethical impact, including
discussion and analysis of the role of writing—40%,
24 points
• oral presentation to class—20%, 12 points

As a conclusion to the course, you will revisit the Statement
of Interests, Experiences, and Qualifications, and resume,
reflecting on how the work from this course informs your own
professional goals. The reflective memo asks you to identify
how your written and analytical skills have developed, and
what you plan to do to continue improving your professional
profile. |
