OVERVIEW

In this course, students continue to learn the basics of ancient Greek, begin reading major classical writers and are introduced to the culture and thought of the Greeks. The course meets four times a week and carries 1.5 credits each semester. Students who begin the Greek 001–002 sequence must pass Greek 002 to receive credit for Greek 001. There is no assumption that students enrolled in Greek 001 and/or 002 have studied Latin.

GOALS

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Translate basic Attic Greek sentences with greatly increased speed and accuracy.
  • Identify and comprehend both simple and complex Greek constructions.
  • Recite Greek prose with confidence and polish.
  • Read passages of continuous Greek prose successfully (with the help of a dictionary).

PREREQUISITES

Greek 002 is normally taken after Greek 001 (GREK 001). If you're concerned about placement in the course, please let me know.

READINGS

You will need to buy a copy of the following text:

  • C. Shelmerdine. L. A. Wilding's Greek for Beginners. Focus, 2001.

The book may be available in the bookstore, but since this is the second half of a two-semester sequence, it is assumed that most students will already own a copy of the text. If you need a copy, try amazon, Barnes & Noble or abe Books (you can probably find a used copy for cheap). *Please make sure that you have the proper edition of this text.*

The rest of the reading assignments for this course will be provided to you in class or made available for download from this website as pdf files. To view/download them, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download available here).

If you plan to continue with Greek, you will eventually need to purchase Liddell and Scott's Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon (the so-called "Middle Liddell;" 7th edition: Oxford UP, 1959). Smaller (the "Little Liddell") and larger (the "Great Scott" - ha ha ha!) editions are also available. You will doubtless also eventually need a copy of Herbert W. Smyth's Greek Grammar (revised edition: Harvard UP, 1983), a must for thorough study of the language. The bookstore may have copies of both/one of these texts. If not, they are widely available online.

GRADING

Grading for the (first half of the) course will be based on the following breakdown:

  • Attendance/Participation (25%): How often you come to class and how enthusiastically you participate in class discussions. I will not take attendance, but will keep an eye out for regular absences and reserve the right to arbitrarily deduct points from those who choose to cut.

  • Homework (25%): Nightly homework assignments from the textbook. This will be collected at the beginning of class and corrected. We will address any serious problems with the homework assignments in class.
  • Quizzes (25%): Quizzes (generally no more than 5–10 minutes in length) will occur at the beginning of every class. These will cover grammar, syntax, form identification and generation, translation and vocabulary. In most cases, we will already have discussed the material appearing on a quiz—with the exception of vocabulary, which I assume you will learn as soon as it is presented to you. Note: vocabulary is cumulative, and I reserve the right to ask you to define words from Greek 1. Buy some flash cards and start memorizing!

  • Hour Exams (25%, 12.5% each): There will be two hour exams in this course. They will occur on Friday, February 16 and Friday, March 9. The exams will cover all material read and discussed in the course over a specific period of time and will consist of identification and generation of forms, declension, conjugation and translation. Do not miss the exam.

OTHER INFO

Surprise! Cheating is not allowed. If you cheat, and I find out, you will receive a grade of 0 for the assignment and be reported to the Office of the Deans. (See their policies on academic honesty.)

Office hours will be held whenever I am in my office. One can generally find me there between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., M–F. (A more detailed breakdown of when I will be available is posted outside my office door.) You are also welcome and encouraged to make an appointment to meet with me. Call, email or holler.

COURSE SCHEDULE

What follows is a sketch outline of the first half of the Spring semester. Assignments are due on the dates specified. On most nights, you'll read a section of the textbook, memorize and/or review a number of forms, practice vocabulary and do a number of written exercises. *NOTE: In the schedule below, Greek words have been transliterated (because Greek will not always display properly in web browsers). Transliterated Greek words are rendered in italics; long vowels are indicated by the circumflex (ˆ) mark.*

Check this page often. Readings and assignments are subject to change. I'll try to give a heads-up in class if a major shake-up is imminent. I'll also try to have readings posted at least a week before the due date.
