Robert M.
Harnish

Robert M. Harnish received his Ph.D.
in Philosophy, with a minor in Linguistics from MIT (1972), where he
wrote a dissertation on logical form. Since 1971 he has been
associated with the University of Arizona, where, until 2005, he was
Professor of Philosophy and Linguistics, and Research Scientist in
Cognitive Science. He helped to establish the linguistics department
in 1974 and become professor of linguistics, and the cognitive
science program in 1984 becoming associate director until 1992. He
continues to do research, and teach selectively, in his areas of
interest: Philosophy of Language (especially Pragmatics), Early
Analytic Philosophy (especially Frege), and Cognitive Science
(especially Experimental Pragmatics). His major current projects are
related to his areas of interest: a book on Frege (Frege's
Philosophy of Language), a book on language structure and speech
acts (Moods and Performances), and some papers in experimental
pragmatics (with Merrill Garrett, Psychology).
