KNOWING IN _HARD TIMES_

Obviously if Sissy's father works in "the horseriding"
she knows a few things about horses.  Her knowledge is
experiential.  When she describes elsewhere her little
friend the circus dog Merrylegs, the reader can see
that Sissy also has warm feelings towards the animals.

Why does Mr. Gradgrind find the kind of knowledge that
      Sissy has of no use?
