THE SAUCERS GAME

This story has two fortune-telling games in it.
The game with the saucers is another game that
tells of romance, death, travel and child-bearing.
The symbol of the saucer of clay that Maria picked
was symbolic of death and not included in the
politer forms of the game. Hence the angry aunts
        and reference to the garden.

So the grown-ups hastily arranged a second try for
Maria and, to everyone's relief, this time she got
        the prayerbook.
